Thor's Helmet Nebula, also known as NGC 2359, is a striking emission nebula located in the constellation Canis Major, approximately 15,000 light-years away from Earth. Its name comes from its resemblance to the helmet worn by the Norse god Thor in mythology. The nebula is created by the strong stellar winds and intense ultraviolet radiation emitted by the central star, a Wolf-Rayet star, which is nearing the end of its life. These forces have sculpted the surrounding gas and dust into intricate filaments and bubbles, creating a beautiful and complex structure. Thor's Helmet Nebula is a favorite target for astronomers and astrophotographers, showcasing the violent beauty of the universe.
